NYC története
The Dutch bought Manhattan from the Indians in 1626, they paid about 60 guldens, which is equivalent to 24 dollars. They established New Amsterdam, then in 1664, the British took over and it was renamed New York after the English Duke of York and Albany in 1664. New York stood as the capital of the United States between 1788-1790. New York’s river, the Hudson River bears the name of an Englishman, Henry Hudson who discovered Manhattan in 1609.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States of America from the French government and was dedicated in 1886, commemorating the 1776 Centennial.
In 1904 the first New York City subway system was created, and the early mass transit paved the way for further city inhabitation and development.
Several of the well-known New York City attractions came to reality in the early 1930s, including Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and The Empire State Building.
The last pivotal point In the city’s recent history was the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center's twin towers in Manhattan. The site is now referred to as Ground Zero, and is open to the public. The new Freedom Tower, to be built exactly where the city’s two tallest buildings stood, is intended to be exactly 1,776 feet tall. This number is symbolic of the year when the American Declaration of Independence was written.

New York is located at the mouth of Hudson River, the south eastern part of New York State. However New York State’s capital is not New York, but Albany. Nicknamed „the Big Apple”, the city is actually at the confluence of the Hudson River, Long Island and the Atlantic Ocean. The city's port was the main disembarkation point for millions of immigrants to the USA.
New York is located in the heart of the largest concentration of population in North America. The city is within one day’s highway travel of 55 percent of the country’s population and of such major cities as Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Washington D.C. This location makes New York an excellent distribution point serving the Northeast, Midwest and Mid-South at the same time.

The city consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island, which formerly was Richmond.
The most densely populated Manhattan which is the business centre of the city, has many districts, each of that is famous for something. Lower Manhattan is where the Twin Towers stood, and where the Wall Street is located. The Theatre district where the Broadway and Times Square are. The Soho is New York’s former artists’ district. Greenwich village has the most famous shopping street, the Fifth Avenue with Carter, Tiffany’s, Bergdorf Goodman and Custom Shop. Chelsea is the home of the Empire State Building. In Lower Midtown is the home to the well-known Chrysler Building and the Headquarters of the United Nations. Bronx is famous for its large racial minority population, home great number of Latinos and blacks. Brooklyn has a long beachfront and Coney Island which served as one of the first amusement areas in the country. The oldest remaining skyscraper in New York is the Flatiron Building famous of its triangular plan. The 285 feet (87 meters) tall Chicago Early Modern style commercial office building was completed in 1902.
