In modern times land-line and wireless telephones provide most of the flow of long-distance interactive telecommunication. Recently internet-based communication has been gaining ground too due to its cost-efficient nature. The number of mobile telephones has grown dynamically over the past few years and according to statistics the three mobile providers boast over 8 million subscriptions in Hungary, a country the population of which is 10 million!
The mobile telephone sets of the 21st century integrate state-of–the-art technologies so they can be used as a telephone, fax, camera, dictaphone, calculator, watch, radio, MP3 player, video-recorder, memory card to mention but a few of the latest innovations. Needless to say, these gadgets can easily be connected to desktop and laptop computers to upload and download data by way of a data cable or via integrated infra-red or bluetooth protocol. Fax machines are still widely used as they have survived as convenient means of document-sending. The free flow of communication is the pre-requisite of the Information Age of the third millennium. Regarding the pace of development it is expected that the whole telecommunication system will be operated free of charge.

No device has brought such a tremendous change in mankind’s life in the past centuries as the spreading of personal computers and the internet.
They have revolutionized nearly every aspect of human life from scientific research and education to technology, logistics, meteorology, medicine, recreation and so on. Home computers also provide prompt access to information thus accelerating the rhythm of human life. They are indispensable accessories of office administration without which effective work would hardly be possible.
There is a wide range of peripherals that can be connected to PCs such as printers, scanners, projectors, photocopiers, multi-function office devices to list but the most important ones. Together with user-friendly software programmes PCs offer unrivalled opportunities to the individual for self-education, entertainment and communication. The portable versions of personal computers -known as laptops or notebooks- have further expanded the scope of their use. Weighing but a few kilograms, laptops can aptly be carried anywhere thus providing immediate access to data, e-mails, bank accounts or stock exchange indices.

Photo copiers, also known as Xerox machines (named after the first manufacturer to produce such a machine) are an indispensable part of the sophisticated arsenal of office appliances of our days. Programmable and fast, they take most of the workload in any office. Some of them also double as scanners or printers or have both features thus making up a compact office machinery. Regarding the features copiers are designed to be connected to PCs and other hardware peripherals too. The most well-known brands that we are likely to see in offices are HP, Minolta, Cannon, Ricoh, Toshiba. The quality of coloured copies of original documents can prove to be so good it has even given rise to many a fraud.

Printers are usually of two kinds: laser or ink-jet ones. They are used primarily to convert PC documents into carbon copy ones. A specific version of printers has been developed to print pic files from our computer onto paper with an almost photograph-like resolution. The appearance of the first printers dates back to the 1980s when bulky, noisy matrix printers sprawled on office desks creating an almost unbearable sound for the human ear. These appliances proved to be slow, yet, relatively reliable. With the fast development of computer and office technologies connecting cables have also undergone a considerable change. By now it is the so-called USB standard that most appliances are fitted with. Thanks to wireless applications it is also possible to send printing commands to printers from laptop computers without any cable connection between the two appliances. Printers usually serve a long life-span, it is only the toners or cartridges that have to be re-filled or replaced in them when the level of ink is running low.
