The Appearance of the First Volkswagen in 1938
Student: Excuse me, could you tell us about the first Volkswagen Beetle?
Professor MacFarlaine: Yes, well, in 1934, Ferdinand Porsche was asked by the German government to design a “car for the people”. A factory was built, and the first “Beetles” were ready in 1938. This was the time when World War II started.
Student: Who were the first Beetle fans?
Professor MacFarlaine: In fact they were the American and British soldiers living in Germany after the Second World War. Some of these soldiers loved their Beetles so much that they even took the cars back to England and America.
Student: Oh, it sounds quite interesting!

Organising a ‘Spring Festival for Beetles’
Advertising Agent: Would it be all right if the name of this festival would be “Spring festival for Beetles”?
Local Representative (of Volkswagen): Yes, it sounds great! Do you think we could arrange this festival by the last weekend of April?
Advertising Agent: Certainly, sir. How many participants would you like to have?
Local Representative: About 4000.
Advertising Agent: Do you mind if we also make a web page containing information on this festival?
Local Representative: No, that’s all right.
Advertising Agent: Can we also arrange a slalom competition with some special prizes?
Local Representative: Yes, that would be marvellous. Moreover, we’d also like to sell German food and beer on the site of the festival.
Advertising Agent: All right. I’ll talk to our graphic designer about the visuals such as posters, flyers and web pages. Is it OK if I send you a detailed “strategic plan” by tomorrow morning?
Local Representative: Yes, that would be gorgeous!

Barbecue Party for Beetles at Devil’s Dyke
Editor: Well, Sue, do you think you could help us design the front page for our next week’s issue?
Graphic designer: Yes, of course. What is it about?
Editor: It’s about a big Beetle Festival code-named Barbecue Party for Beetles.
Graphic Designer: How about any further details?
Editor: The site itself – it might also be a good idea to use it as a background – is a place called Devil’s Dyke!
Graphic Designer: Oh, Devil’s Dyke is a beautiful place! I’ve been there three times in my life, and I’d love to go there again!
Editor: All in all, let’s sum up what we’ve got. Firstly, we’ve got the site, Devil’s Dyke, one of the most beautiful areas in England. Secondly, we’ve got a barbecue party with a large group of cheerful participants. And thirdly, We’ve got one of the most loved car brands in the world: it’s called Volkswagen Beetle.
Graphic Designer: Would it be all right if I showed my plan to you in about an hour?
Editor: Yes, of course. And thank you in advance!
