Seminar – The History of ‘The Economist’
Student: Professor MacFarlaine, could you tell us how the story of ‘The Economist’ started?
Professor MacFarlaine: Yes, of course. ‘The Economist’ is a weekly news and international affairs publication. It has been published since September 1843.
Student: What was the original purpose of this magazine?
Professor MacFarlaine: The editors of ‘The Economist’ defined thirteen areas of coverage that they wanted to focus on right from the beginning. Some of these areas are the following: 1. “original leading articles, in which free-trade principles will be most rigidly applied”; 2. “an article on the elementary principles of political economy”; 3. “parliamentary reports, with particular focus on commerce, agriculture, and free trade.”
Student: Oh, it sounds really interesting! Could you tell us about some of the other areas?
Professor MacFarlaine: Of course I will. But let’s have a short break first.

Jack: Hi James! How are you today?
James: Hi Jack! I’m fine, thanks. What are you doing this afternoon?
Jack: Well, I’m going to read ‘The Economist.’ I’ve just bought the latest issue!
James: Have you already looked at the headlines?
Jack: Yes, I have. You know, I always start with ‘Politics This Week’ and ‘Business This Week.’
James: Really? And what have you found in ‘Politics This Week’?
Jack: This section is full of interesting news: firstly, “Bush attended a summit with EU leaders in Vienna”; secondly, “three pro-western parties in Ukraine formed a coalition”; thirdly, “America, Japan, South Korea and many other countries strongly urged North Korea not to test a long-range missile”; and fourthly, “Charles Taylor, a former Liberian president accused of overseeing the killing of thousands of civilians is to be tried for war crimes at UN-backed Special Court at The Hague.”
James: Oh, it sounds very interesting. Well, I haven’t got too much money this week. Therefore I’ll only read it online.

Newsagent: Yes, I have. It’s no problem. Here you are the change: it’s 4,100 forints.
