Vending machines are common fittings of offices which dispense various kinds of merchandise. The customer inserts money into the slot to purchase the desired item. Vending machines have an interesting history. It is said that a Greek mathematician invented such a machine in 215 B.C. which was dispensing holy water to worshippers for ritual cleansing. The first modern vending machine dispensed post cards in London in the 1880’s.
Vending machines usually serve the purpose of selling snacks and beverages. Coffee, cappuccino, tea, hot drinks and soups are the most popular items of beverages. These are not too delicious, yet, they may serve the purpose of quenching clients’ thirst. The other big group of vending machines is that of soft drinks machines. The most popular items used to be sold by Coca Cola and Pepsi but nowadays there is an enormous variety of soft drinks to choose from. In some countries alcoholic drinks can also be obtained from vending machines but it’s not typical in Hungary.

In offices when you are about to arrange something you usually have to wait and stand in a queue. Instead of this tiring and boring process a new system was devised where you can draw a number and wait for your turn. Near the entrance you will find a machine with a screen so you can choose what you would like to do by pressing the relevant item on it. These so-called touch-screens have come into fashion only in recent times. It’s very easy to handle them: you can choose your area by touching the screen then after getting a number you have to watch the display where the numbers are called. The calling number informs you about the expected time of waiting and the number of persons ahead. The number of the desk where you will be received is usually printed on your number. Upon getting to the desk you have to give your number to the administrator.
