Presentation about German Wines
(German) Wine Producer: First of all, let me mention that there are about 25,000 wine producers in Germany. I’m just one of them.
Tourist: Could you tell us about the wine that you produce?
Wine Producer: Our most popular product is ‘Müller Thurgau.’
Tourist: What kind of wine is it?
Wine Producer: We might say it’s a cross between Riesling and Gutedel. Anyway, it’s one of the best wines in Germany, which is an important thing that can be said about it. ‘Müller Thurgau’ is early ripening, high yielding, and it’s been planted all over Germany since the 1960s.
Tourist: It seems to me it’s a typical German sweet wine, isn’t it?
Wine Producer: On the one hand, it’s true, as about 80% of ‘Müller Thurgau’ is sweet. However, some ambitious growers also experiment with dry styles, low yields and even oak barrels to squeeze something interesting out of it!

Choosing among White Wines
Charles: What kind of wine would you like to buy for the party?
Sue: You know, I’d like to buy some kind of white wine.
Charles: All right let’s look at the wines they’ve got on the shelves! How about some of these Riesling wines?
Sue: I like Riesling. Have you heard that it is said to be one of the best grape varieties in Germany?
Charles: No, I haven’t.
Sue: But I’m not sure about these brands here. They’ve got ‘Müller Thurgau’, ‘Silvaner’, ‘Grauburgunder’ and ‘Weissburgunder’ here. You know, I’d like to buy a dry white wine. Do you have any suggestions?
Charles: Well, how about ‘Silvaner’? Let me read out what the label says: “an old variety that finds its greatest expression in some of the dry wines of Franken, where it can be reminiscent of a good Chablis when grown on limestone soils, or even be opulent with exotic fruit notes.”
Sue: Oh, it sounds great! I think we should get some.
Charles: OK, let’s buy two bottles of Silvaner. How does that sound?
Sue: Great! Let’s go to the checkout and pay.

Ordering Wine on the Phone
Festival Organiser: Good morning. This is Michael Robinson. I’m a festival organiser, and I’m wondering if I could talk to someone about ordering some wine for a carnival.
Wholesaler: Good morning. This is John Canny. What kind of wine would you like, sir?
Festival Organiser: Last time we tried Pinot Blanc, that is, Weissburgunder. All the participants liked it a lot. Have you got it with a pear aroma?
Wholesaler: Yes, of course. How much of it would you like, sir?
Festival Organiser: We’d like to order 80 bottles of Weissburgunder with a pear aroma.
Wholesaler: Would you like us to deliver it to the venue for the carnival?
Festival Organiser: Yes, please. We’d like you to deliver it to the Savoy Hotel, in London.
Wholesaler: Is this hotel near the Strand?
Festival Organiser: Yes, it is.
Wholesaler: Is it all right if we deliver it to the Savoy by 5 o’clock this afternoon?
Festival Organiser: Oh, yes, that would be perfect! Thanks a lot!
Wholesaler: Not at all!
